What Do You Think of This Serial Killer Signature?
I’m writing a screenplay (a movie, not a book) about a team of detectives assigned to a case about a serial killer, who then chooses one of the cops as his next target. I was thinking that his signature could be tying a red ribbon or scarf around his victims’ necks after he kills them.
His reasoning would be because his mother’s favorite color was red and she always used to wear a red scarf.
If you don’t like this, could you suggest any other signatures that would be good?

A serial killers signature is an essential element of his psychosis, it’s unique to the specific killer because it’s compulsive, his act of murder would be futile without it. The murder itself is less important than his ritual. It would not be so mundane as his mother’s favorite colored scarf. It would have no connection with his mother whatsoever unless his mother had been abusive or his psychosis in another way was linked to his mother. Serial killers, organized ones (I assume yours fits this category) have a very compulsive but careful selection process when it come to the victim, only during their devolving state do they choose victims of opportunity. You will need to give a strong reason why he’s going after the cop. It has to fit his pattern and satisfy a deep need within the killer.
